UBC’s Most Exciting AR/VR Projects

Post date :

May 20, 2023

As virtual reality gains popularity, universities worldwide are working on various projects. Dr Ray Hsu, Founder of the Immersive Technology Lab and Chair of the Virtual and Augmented Reality Working Group at UBC, leads the exploration of VR/AR applications in education.

Here are some notable UBC augmented and virtual reality projects:

  1. Virtual Reality Lab at UBC Studios:
UBC has opened a VR lab accessible to all students, staff, and faculty at UBC Studios—a creative space on campus. The lab features HTC Vive headsets, controllers, and other VR devices. It welcomes users interested in research, learning, or recreation.

  2. Emerging Media Lab at UBC:
The Emerging Media Lab at UBC offers a collaborative space for students to experiment with new technologies and create digital media. Equipped with tools for video-making, audio recording, website development, and more, the lab fosters peer learning and collaboration.

  3. UBC HIVE:
The Faculty of Medicine's HIVE (Hackspace for Innovation and Visualization in Education) incorporates several XR projects:

    • SimBrain VR: A virtual reality simulation that combines neurological clinical exams with neuroscience and neuroanatomy knowledge. It enables students to integrate their neuroanatomy understanding with clinical presentations through a Clinical Room and a Mind Palace.

    • VanVR: An app providing an immersive virtual learning environment where medical students can interact with 3D scans of anatomical and pathological specimens.

    • HoloBrain: A mixed reality brain simulation using holographic models created from 3D reconstructions of basal ganglia nuclei, aiding brain anatomy teaching.

    • MR Manikin/OCS: A 3D learning scenario allowing learners to respond to altered vital and physical signs on an augmented CPR mannequin.

    • Pocket Pelvis: An AR app projecting pelvic anatomy onto a 3D-printed model using mobile devices for enhanced learning.

    • It's All in Your Brain: An immersive storytelling and VR experience offering insights into life with chronic pain for health professional students.

UBC is at the forefront of innovation, offering courses like XR Development with Unity, Interaction Design and Prototyping for XR, and the Unity Developer Bootcamp for individuals interested in learning AR/VR design and development. With AR/VR rapidly expanding and its integration into daily life on the horizon, now is the perfect time to acquire XR skills. Embracing AR/VR and developing these skills opens up numerous opportunities to contribute to the future of this transformative technology.
